NETS NEW ARENA; THE BARCLAYS CENTER
Since 1957 when the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles, the New York City borough of Brooklyn has been without a professional sports franchise. That will change in 2012 when the New Jersey Nets move to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. For over five years there were discussions and attempts to build a new arena in Brooklyn. Financial and development hurdles were overcome and in March 2010 construction began on a new NBA arena in Brooklyn. Constructed atop the Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, the Nets arena is being built as part of a $3.5 billion multiuse complex that includes an arena, businesses and residential areas. It will have a seating capacity of 18,000 for basketball and expandable for other events. Barclays Bank of London bought the naming rights to the arena for $400 million over 20 years. The Barclays Center is scheduled to open in 2012.
